WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT BOTTLED WATER FOR DISASTER RELIEF?

Disasters can befall any society and can effect any community.  Disasters include both natural and human induced crises such as floods, droughts, earthquakes and war.  Often natural disasters are exacerbated by human activities such as increased risks and consequences of floods due to poor land-use practices which are themselves the results of poverty, the pressure of increased population, misguided public policy and a host of other causes.

Conservation, A Way of Life

As residents of Southern California, it is important to remember that we live in a semi-arid area that receives unpredictable amounts of rainfall and has limited local water resources. Therefore, we must all work together to conserve as much water as possible to ensure adequate supplies during those hot summer months in the years to come.

Water is critical to life, health, and sustainable development. Yet, worldwide, more than a billion people do not have access to this basic resource. More than two billion do not have adequate sanitation. Every day, an estimated 25,000 people die from a lack of safe water and sanitation.

The lack of safe water affects one-sixth of the world’s population in many ways. It prevents children from attending school. It forces women and girls to spend many exhausting hours each day fetching and carrying heavy buckets of usually dirty water. Water is a critical need after disasters. A lack of water it contributes to the poverty cycle that prevents people in poor countries from attaining a better standard of living.

How Much Water do I Need?

You should have at least a three-day supply of water and you should store at least one gallon of water per person per day. A normally active person needs at least one-half gallon of water daily just for drinking.

- Additionally, in determining adequate quantities, take the following into account:

- Individual needs vary, depending on age, physical condition, activity, diet, and climate.

- Children, nursing mothers, and ill people need more water.

- Very hot temperatures can double the amount of water needed.

- A medical emergency might require additional water
