HOMELESS
KIDS ON THE
STREET |
|

 |
Homeless
youth
need a
voice
and
hope. A
day from
the
street,
and to
help
them
express
themselves,
making
sure the
decision
makers
at all
levels
of
government
and
private
industry
consider
the
needs of
these
youth.
We're
committed
to
raising
the
awareness
of
legislators
and the
public
at large
to the
problems
suffering
youngsters
face. We
seek to
partner
with
private
businesses,
government,
and
community
agencies
and
associations
in order
to
improve
the
lives of
families
and
young
people
in
California.
A day of
fun and
hope at
the
beach
just
being
kids.
There
are an
estimated
12,000
to
15,000
homeless
youth
living
on L.A.
County
streets
and
another
10,000
living
in the
Bay
Area.
Of the
1,500
youth
who
emancipate
from the
foster
care
system
in Los
Angeles
and
Alameda
Counties
each
year,
nearly
50% will
be
homeless
within
six
months.
Homeless
and
emancipated
foster
youth
experience
disproportionately
higher
rates of
unemployment,
lower
educational
attainment,
incarceration,
dependence
on
public
assistance,
substance
abuse,
non-marital
childbirth
and
other
high-risk
behaviors.
According
to the
Local
Emergency
Shelter
Strategy
for Los
Angeles
County,
there
are only
468
beds, or
3%
targeted
for
unaccompanied
youth.
For
Alameda
County,
our
shelter
is the
only one
serving
18-21
year
olds.

FEMAP For a
Healthy
Youth
Since the
early
1980's, the
community
development
programs of
FEMAP have
targeted the
adolescent
population,
particularly
in the areas
of
reproductive
health,
prevention
of HIV and
other
sexually
transmitted
diseases,
and
prevention
of drug and
alcohol
abuse. The
first youth
program to
develop
formally was
called "Programa
para el
Desarrollo
Integral de
la Juventud"
(PROJUVE-FEMAP),
and was
implemented
among 15
affiliated
members of
FEMAP
throughout
Mexico. Out
of budgetary
concerns, in
1993 this
program was
integrated
into the
reproductive
health
programs of
FEMAP, until
1999, with
the
beginning of
FEMAP por
una Juventud
Sana, or
FEMAP for a
Healthy
Youth. With
the
financial
support of
the Paso Del
Norte Health
Foundation,
this program
was
implemented
in Ciudad
Juarez. This
initiative
spread to
other cities
including
Cuahutemoc,
Guadalajara,
Mazatlan,
Matamoros,
Veracruz,
Saltillo,
and Xalapa,
through the
support of
Family
Planning
International
Assistance.
