Did You Know?
Named after its shell, which is leathery rather than
hard like other turtle shells, the leatherback is the
largest sea turtle and one of the largest living
reptiles. It is also one of the most migratory, making
both trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific crossings.
Scientists estimate that 50,000 leatherbacks are
unintentionally caught each year by commercial
fisheries, and roughly half of those turtles die.
